Calfkiller Tennessee Agate

Calfkiller Tennessee Agate
In the Sparta area you find a lot of seam agate with colors of red, black, green, yellow, and gray. The knife handles in this picture is agate found on the Caney Fork River below Virgin Falls. It has great color, but the river is full of big agate with most of the color washed out turning everything dark. For this reason not much is collected. It is also very hard, much like porcelain jasper. You do find a little with black, white and red which I like. In one of the rock quarry in Sparta you find some with nice yellow, red, and green. These colors are like a solid moss. I've only found a little agate in the Cookeville area with a brown fortification in it. You can also find some nice black and red flint in the area. Since not site exist, I can not tell you any place to go except the river's. All are on private property except in the Virgin Falls area so you may have a problem getting to the rivers. I will add some pictures over the next few weeks.

I like this slab since it is red and black moss type agate. It is very hard to saw, but takes a wonderful polish. It came from the Sparta area.
